Active Kids

Active Kids is our nationwide scheme to help inspire school children to take more exercise and to eat more healthily. The scheme was launched in March and is open to all primary and secondary schools in the UK.

‘BGtY’ – ‘Be Good to Yourself’

Sainsbury’s healthier alternative sub-brand range of products, featuring circa 500 products. Products fall into one of three categories: those with less than 3% fat; those with less calories, salt and saturated fat than standard lines; or ‘plus’ products that are fortified with added ingredients (including pre-biotics, pro-biotics and Omega 3).

Business in the Community (BITC)

UK organisation of 700 member companies, with a further 1,600 participating in programmes and campaigns; operates through a network of 98 local business-led partnerships to improve business’ social impacts.

Carbon dioxide (CO2)

A greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change.

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)

A coordinating secretariat for a group of 95 major institutional investors who have written to the world’s 500 largest companies asking for the disclosure of investment-relevant information concerning their greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate Change

Changes in the world’s climate caused by increased concentration of greenhouse gases (particularly carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with global warming.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

CSR is ‘the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development whilst improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community and society at large’ – from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development publication “Making Good Business Sense”.

Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes

Launched in 1999, these indexes track the financial performance of the leading sustainability driven companies worldwide.

Energy efficiency

Reducing the amount of energy used.

Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI)

An alliance of companies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and trade union organisations to improve supply chain working conditions. Sainsbury’s was a founder member.

Fairtrade

The Fairtrade mark is an independent consumer label that guarantees a fair deal for marginalised workers and small scale farmers in developing countries. Producers receive a minimum price that covers the cost of production and an extra premium that is invested in the local community.

Farm connections

An initiative which gives Sainsbury’s beef farmers computers, software and training to help them be more competitive.

‘Farm promise’ milk

A scheme where we work directly with farmers to encourage them to move to organic.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

A non-profit NGO that certifies timber companies as managing their forests or plantations sustainably, including relations with neighbours and indigenous people.

The Food Standards Agency is an independent government department set up by an act of Parliament in 2000 to protect the public's health and consumer interests in relation to food.

Genetic modification (GM)

The artificial insertion of a foreign gene into the genetic material of an organism.

Global Warming

Changes in the world’s climate caused by increased concentration of greenhouse gases (particularly carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere. The term is sometimes used interchangeably with climate change.

Greenhouse gas (GHG)

A gas that allows sunlight to enter the atmosphere but absorbs the heat (infrared radiation) created as the sunlight is reflected off the Earth’s surface. The main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, water vapour, ozone, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Increased atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) are causing climate change.

Greenpeace

Greenpeace is an independent non-profit global campaigning organisation.

Health and Safety executive (HSE)

The Health and Safety Commission is responsible for health and safety regulation in Great Britain. The Health and Safety Executive and local government are the enforcing authorities who work in support of the Commission.

Hydrogenated Vegetable Oils.

‘Kids’

Sainsbury’s children’s sub-brand range featuring 100 products. Sainsbury’s was the first retailer to provide GDAs for children aged five to ten years on packaging.

Local Heroes

Our awards designed to recognise and encourage the many colleagues on our stores, depots and offices who donate their time and effort to a broad range of good causes outside work.

London Benchmarking Group (LBG)

A membership organisation established to help companies manage, measure and report their involvement in the community. It runs the LBG model for community investment.

Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)

An independent non-profit organisation that promotes responsible fishing practices. Products that carry the MSC logo have been certified as being sourced from sustainable and well-managed fisheries.

Mind, Exercise, Nutrition and Do it (MEND)

Sainsbury’s fund the MEND programme to improve health , fitness and self-esteem in obese children. It is run by experts in psychology, nutrition and exercise.

‘Mutliple traffic light’ labelling

Symbol on 1,300 Sainsbury’s own-brand products providing customers with accurate and easy to read labelling featuring five key colour coded nutrients.

National Farmers' Union (NFU)

The National Farmers' Union represents the farmers and growers of England and Wales. Its central objective is to promote successful and socially responsible agriculture and horticulture, while ensuring the long term viability of rural communities.

NCC

National Consumer Council.

Non-governmental organisation (NGO)

A catch-all phrase to describe pressure groups and non-profit organisations.

Organic

Organic farming prohibits the use of artificial fertilisers, pesticides, growth regulators and additives in livestock feed. The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) accredits national organic certifying bodies.

Pesticides

Chemicals used to control pests. They include insecticides (to control insects), fungicides (to control fungi) and herbicides (to control weeds).

Renewable energy

Energy resources that are naturally replenished eg wind, solar, and biomass.

Sainsbury’s Assisting Village Enterprises Scheme (SAVE)

A unique scheme which helps small independent shops and post offices providing essential services in rural areas by enabling them to buy non-perishable products in our stores for sale in their own shops.

Sainsbury’s organic subbrand range of products, featuring circa 300 products.

‘Save it’ campaign

Part of our official retail procedures document. The campaign aims to raise awareness of energy efficiency and climate change issues among colleagues in all stores.

The Carbon Trust is an independent Government-funded organisation that aims to help the UK move to low carbon economy.

Think 21

A strategy whereby all colleagues are trained to check the age of anyone buying alcohol if they appear 21 or under. Customers unable to produce valid ID are refused the sale.

The marketing campaign in support of Making Sainsbury’s Great Again.

Wellbeing Charter

Our colleague programme providing a rehabilitation process focusing on areas such as physiotherapy to enable colleagues to return to work after a period of long-term sickness absence. As well as advice on healthy eating, smoking cessation and increased exercise.

Whistle blowing

Colleagues are able to report any serious misconduct, fraud or other malpractice that could expose the company to loss, liability or embarrassment.

Woodland Trust

The Woodland Trust is the UK's leading conservation charity dedicated to the protection of our native woodland heritage.

WWF Forest and Trade Network (FTN)

A partnership between WWF (the international conservation organisation) and business to promote the responsible management of the world's forests.
